Two depths.
One environmental picture.

A practical sensor configuration designed to establish how environmental conditions change between the upper water column and the mussel culture depth.

The proposed MVP configuration uses two measurement depths. Four core environmental parameters are measured at 2.5 metres, while the complete six-sensor suite is deployed at 15 metres. The 2.5 m depth reflects the current maximum operating depth of the selected salinity sensor.

Why two depths?

The value is not simply in collecting more data, but in being able to compare conditions.

Vertical variation

Comparing 2.5 m with 15 m provides direct evidence of how temperature, salinity, oxygen and biological activity vary through the water column.

Culture-depth insight

The 15 m station provides the richer environmental picture at the depth relevant to the current culture configuration.

Early indicators

Over time, the data may reveal whether changes detected nearer the surface provide an early indication of subsequent conditions at 15 m.

A sensible MVP boundary

Start with the measurements that can answer the most useful questions.

The configuration deliberately avoids adding a third measurement depth at this stage. The objective is first to establish whether there is meaningful and repeatable environmental differentiation between 2.5 m and 15 m.

The four common parameters provide the basis for direct comparison, while turbidity and pH at 15 m extend the environmental picture at the primary culture depth.

Once sufficient data have been collected, the evidence can determine whether additional measurement depths — for example 5 m or 10 m — would provide material additional value.

From measurement to Environmental Intelligence

The longer-term objective is not simply to collect environmental data. OceanPulse can use the relationship between measurements, change over time and observed outcomes to develop meaningful indicators of environmental condition, emerging risk and the effectiveness of intervention.
